GPON: from a Wi-Fi symptom to a provisioning fault

I investigated intermittent outages and problems opening web pages at an educational centre. The diagnosis ruled out radio-frequency issues and narrowed the incident to connectivity between the ONT and OLT.

Context

A technician reported intermittent outages and problems opening web pages on certain devices. The incident affected lessons.

Responsibility

I used Ekahau to rule out wireless causes, kept the client informed and coordinated an on-site visit with the manufacturer.

Constraints

  • The client, educational centre and manufacturer remain anonymous.
  • The symptoms were intermittent and affected specific devices.
  • The investigation had to distinguish between wireless causes and GPON connectivity.

Decisions

  1. I used Ekahau to rule out interference, airtime congestion and poor coverage.
  2. After ruling out radio-frequency causes, I narrowed the problem to connectivity between the ONT and OLT.
  3. I kept the client informed and coordinated an on-site visit with the manufacturer.

Outcome

The fault was identified as a provisioning problem. After the system was reprovisioned, the service worked again and the procedure was recorded in a provisioning guide.

Verification

A follow-up check confirmed that the service was working.

Learning

On some equipment, the web interface can show different information from the CLI.
